Vicious, by V.E. Schwab — 5 ★
It would be a huge understatement to say I love V.E. Schwab’s writing.
I am, in fact, in complete AWE in front of her way of telling stories. If you followed me a little at the beginning of the year (or if you’re one of the numerous people who I recommended it to), you know I ADORED The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue. It was my first V.E. Schwab’s book and I knew right then and there that I HAD to read all of her work.
Gallant, The Shades of Magic series and Vicious were all on my shelves, and I have to say I didn’t really know where to start, so I just chose randomly… and OH LORD wasn’t I disappointed.
Let’s start by saying that Vicious is NOTHING like Addie LaRue. And that’s one of the things I like most about V.E. Schwab : she can write anything. But that’s for another post (you’re not surprised I’ll be doing a V.E. Schwab appreciation post, are you?).
I didn’t really know what I was getting into beforehand, but I quickly immersed in Victor Vale’s dark story.
Storywise, I LOVED the settings and the world building. EOs and their place in our world felt real and almost palpable to me; I almost wanted to believe it was all real (even though it’s not all rainbows and butterflies, far from it). I also loved V.E. Schwab’s take on the whole mutant thing. After X-Men, it could’ve been difficult to create something different and good, but she hit it right on the nail for me.
But what I liked the most was definitely the characters. GOOD LORD can V.E. Schwab create characters that are complex, authentic and multidimensional. I felt like I really understood Victor, Eli, Sydney, Serena, Mitch… all of them were their own person, with their past, their fears, their anguish, their dreams, their beliefs…
I believed in them. I rooted for them. I hated them. I cried for them.
Yes, I loved them.
Second understatement of this post : I can’t wait to start Vengeful!
Have you read this series? If so, what did you think? If not… READ IT!
Love xx
